With the best sunshine record outside La Côte d'Azur (2600 hours per year), this part of south-west France has long been a popular holiday area.
There is a magnificient coastline. You can wander down to the bottom of the site and gaze out over the lagoon formed by the bay of Bonne Anse on la Palmyre beach. The stunning beach of la Côte Sauvage, “Wild Coast ”, is just 1 mile from the bottom of the site and is a popular venue for surfing enthusiasts.
The Gironde estuary has a fascinating maritime heritage to discover by boat : the oyster beds of Marennes Oléron, the Cordouan lighthouse, the well known Boyard Fort, Louvois Fort and the island of Aix.
Visit the seaside resort of St Palais sur Mer. Stroll through the leafy streets lined with belle epoque villas and see the oddly shaped rocks at the beach which have inspired generations of storytellers.
The nearby beautiful coastal towns of Royan and La Rochelle are also well worth a visit.
